About me
I did my bachelor in Marine Biology, in Universidad Católica de Chile, where I had two research projects. (1) I developed a method to detect Prochlorococcus picks in CTD data from the Oxygen Minimum Zones in front of the Chile-Peru coast, and (2) I explored the application of machine learning methods to identify toxic dinoflagellates in Flow Cytometry data. After university, I did a diploma in Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computing Sciences, Universidad de Chile, where the final project was about using Convolutional Neural Networks to detect toxic dinoflagellates in microscopy images.
I joined the MarMic programme in 2021. For my Master Thesis I characterised the family Ilumatobacteraceae in coastal sediments from Isfjorden, Svalbard, under the supervision of Dr. Katrin Knittel. I designed FISH probes to identify Ilumatobacteraceae, and analysed their phylogeny based on 16S rRNA sequences and metagenomes.
In the last year, I have been working on the taxonomic description of the class Acidimicrobiia in marine benthic environments.
My PhD is about describing the bacterial colonization of sand grains. I am trying to bridge an ecological models of meta-communities with bacterial communities in sandy sediments. My general scientific interests are theoretical ecology and community dynamics.
