Research Interest
Continental shelves are mostly covered by sandy sediments, which are highly efficient bioreactors that remineralize organic carbon and reduce inorganic nitrogen to N2. Despite an improving understanding of the transport mechanisms that drive pore water flow in sandy sediments, little is known about the factors that control microbial activity on µm-scales.
My research focuses on developing methods to unravel the factors determining carbon turnover and nutrient loss in coastal oceans, specifically sediments. Currently, I am combining laboratory measurements using O2 sensitive sensor particles with modeling approaches to determine the nitrogen loss (mainly denitrification) mediated by continental shelf sediments due to the formation of anoxic microenvironments.
