Plenty of great food was provided for.

Already 30 years – in 1992 a handful of researchers set sail in Bremen on an expedition into the world of microorganisms. At that time, the two founding directors Bo Barker Jørgensen and Friedrich Widdel led the quest into the still young research field of marine microbiology. Today, more than 200 employees are working here and the institute‘s building has been expanded several times. The research field of marine microbiology has lost none of its relevance. Our researchers continue to address new questions in order to better understand the interconnections and functioning of our blue planet and its smallest inhabitants, and their importance in our lives.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, current and former staff members, collaborators and research friends from all over the world met on August 22 and 23 for a scientific symposium and informal get-together. It was an inspiring, enriching and delightful event – manythanks to the organizing team, all helpers and participants for celebrating this anniversary with us. We are already looking forward to the next 30 years packed with exciting research!
