Abstract:

The talk will explore the molecular mechanism of electron exchange betweenmicrobes and insoluble extracellular transition metal minerals - ‘electron transfer at themicrobe-mineral interface’. Such processes drive the carbon cycle and impact manyother critical biogeochemical cycles in diverse terrestrial and aquatic environments. The structure of electrically insulated nanowires that conduct electrons from inside thecell to mineralised metals in the extracellular environment will be presented. Thefunctionality of these wires in proteoliposomes for rapid electron transfer from an intra-liposome electron pool to extracellular ferric minerals will be also presented alongwith some insights into how these insulated nanowires are assembled in the cell.
