My Research

My research interests lie in aquatic and marine microbiology, focusing on bacterial diversity, microbial interactions, and microbial contributions to ecosystem functioning. My research experience spans bacterial cultivation and taxonomy, antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments, and marine microbial ecology. Combining cultivation-based and multi-omics approaches, I am particularly interested in understanding how marine microbial communities interact with algae, respond to environmental changes, and contribute to marine carbon cycling.

  • I began my research career by isolating and characterizing bacterial strains, including the identification of novel bacterial species. By optimizing culture media and growth conditions, I developed cultivation approaches to isolate and grow bacteria with specific growth requirements on agar plates.
  • I subsequently investigated the gut microbiota of farmed and wild aquatic animals, with a particular focus on antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). My research combined cultivation-based approaches, sequencing-based microbial community analysis, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) to assess bacterial diversity, characterize antibiotic resistance, and quantify selected ARGs. This work also involved field sampling at aquaculture facilities, linking laboratory investigations with practical challenges in aquaculture production.

  • My current research focuses on marine microbial ecology, with particular interests in microbial interactions, community dynamics, and functional activity. Building on my previous research on microbial communities associated with marine macroalgae and microalgae, I investigate how free-living and particle-associated microorganisms respond to phytoplankton bloom dynamics and environmental changes. By integrating metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and environmental observations, I aim to understand the ecological roles of these microorganisms, particularly their contributions to organic matter degradation and carbon cycling in marine ecosystems.
