Candidatus Azoamicus ciliaticola is an obligate gammaproteobacterial endosymbiont which respires nitrate and transfers the resulting energy to its anaerobic ciliate host. Since its original discovery in stratified freshwater Lake Zug, symbionts related to Ca. A. ciliaticola have been detected in other aquatic environments on a global scale. The heavily reduced genome of these endosymbionts makes them interesting models to study organelle establishment in eukaryotes.
In my doctoral study, I aim to explore the genomic diversity of these so-called respiratory endosymbionts in various habitats through the recovery of metagenome-assembled genomes. Furthermore, I assess their biogeography by screening published amplicon datasets. Finally, I investigate the evolutionary history of respiratory endosymbionts as well as their association with the hosts.
