Review of the year 2021

No water, no life. No blue, no green.

The days have become quite short and the Christmas lights make it unmistakably clear – the year 2021 is rapidly coming to an end. Despite the exceptional conditions caused by Corona, a lot has happened again this year: Our researchers have done exciting research and experiments and many were able to present their results in high-profile journals. We hosted this year's federal conference of Schule MIT Wissenschaft. There were some prizes for our staff, for example, our trainee Mandy Knutzen was awarded the Max Planck Society Trainee Prize (Azubipreis) and group leader Antje Boetius received the Urania Medal. Benedikt Geier and Katharina Kitzinger received the Otto Hahn Medal this year for their outstanding doctoral theses. We also had the pleasure of welcoming a new Marmic class with students from eight countries.

It was an eventful year with nitrogen and oxygen, archaea, bacteria and viruses, enzymes and proteins – and much more from the exciting world of marine microbiology! Many thanks to all our colleagues from far and near for a beautiful and successful year 2021!

We wish you all good health, a Merry Christmas, relaxing holidays and a Happy New Year!
