EuroMarine - A new multidisciplinary marine network: From genes to ecosystems

EuroMarine - A new multidisciplinary marine network: From genes to ecosystems

Three major European marine research Networks of Excellence are preparing for integration with a shared vision which aims to bring a fresh multidisciplinary perspective to the marine sciences to answer important questions related to the functioning of marine ecosystems and the needs of society.

The three former marine FP6 Networks of Excellence EUR-OCEANS, MarBEF and Marine Genomics Europe (all in all 120 institutes and organizations) have entered a joint project – “EuroMarine” with the aim to bring leading European marine scientists together to facilitate collaborations across scientific disciplines. Many marine research questions can only be answered using a multidisciplinary approach, both at the molecular level with genomics and other new emerging ‘omics technologies in combination with an integrated ecological, physical and biogeochemical ecosystem analysis and interpretation.
“It is particularly important that future studies take a holistic approach and examine the same problem from as many different perspectives as possible. To this end knowledge needs to be more efficiently exchanged between researchers from different disciplines”, says Mike Thorndyke at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), who coordinates EuroMarine. He continues: “It is for example important that discoveries about gene function in a specific fish in a specific habitat is accessible to researchers who study the environment where this fish lives and vice versa”.
EuroMarine is a two-year planning phase project funded by the European Commission (1 M€, February 2011 - January 2013) aiming to create an internationally competitive network for marine sciences in Europe, “The EuroMarine Consortium”. This future network will develop strategies and services to (1) define research priorities, (2) facilitate information and knowledge exchange in collaboration with existing research infrastructures, and (3) educate future generations of multi-disciplinary marine scientists. The planning phase is led by universities and institutions from Sweden, Portugal, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Belgium, and is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg (all partners listed below).
