MARUM Research Award for Sina Schorn

Sina Schorn wrote her dissertation in the Greenhouse Gases Research Group of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and defended on the 12th of July 2021. We congratulate her very warmly on this award!
Award-winning research on seagrass meadows
Schorn's doctoral thesis focused on microbial methane metabolism in aquatic ecosystems.Among other things, she studied the methane emissions from seagrass beds, and specifically the microbial activity behind these emissions.
Seagrass meadows play an important role in the marine carbon cycle and our climate. On the one hand, they sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it underground, on the other hand, they emit the potent greenhouse gas methane. „My research enabled a deeper understanding of the marine carbon cycle in coastal areas. We also met some surprises, for example that the same microbial mechanisms underlie methane production in sediments underneath living and dead seagrass meadows. We need to understand how the seagrass meadow ecosystem functions in order to determine the impact of the ongoing global change on it,” Schorn emphasizes.
The MARUM Research Award for Marine Sciences
The MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen annually issues the MARUM Research Award for Marine Sciences. This prize is awarded to outstanding master's or doctoral theses that have been written over the past two years by young marine scientists at the University of Bremen. The prize money of up to € 3,000 is to be used as a scholarship and is intended to benefit the scientific objectives of the awardee.
