MPI researchers on board of the German research vessel “Polarstern”.

The RV Polarstern cruise ARK-XXII/1a-c contributes to the EU-funded project HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas) and is an initiative of the International Polar Year.
During Leg1a (29.05.-21.06.) the ecology of cold water coral reefs along the Norwegian margin have been studied. During Leg1b (23.06. - 09.07) we will investigate with the help of the deep-water robot QUEST (MARUM) the distribution and activity of microbial communities at the famous Haakon Mosby Mud Volcano, which is known to emit large quantities of methane to the hydrosphere. The geological, chemical and biological investigation of gas seeps in polar regions and other areas of the world's ocean is a focus of a research collaboration of MPI, AWI and IFREMER, and is carried out in cooperation with several other national and international institutions in the framework of HERMES.
